To understand the current status of energy saving development of rural buildings in Henan Province, the thermal performance of existing rural building envelopes in Henan Province is investigated and summarized. The results show that the overall thermal performance of the walls, roofs, doors and windows of existing rural buildings is poor, resulting in a large energy consumption for heating and cooling. The typical rural buildings in Henan Province are selected for the renovation design of the envelope structure. The PKPM software is used to calculate and compare the energy efficiency improvement rate and economy of the buildings before and after the renovation. It is concluded that the energy efficiency improvement route of the existing rural buildings could be determined according to the priority order of roof, exterior wall, exterior doors and windows. Among them, for the renovation of the roof, its energy efficiency improvement rate is relatively high, the cost is lower, and the thickness of the insulation layer can be more than 50 mm. For the renovation of the exterior wall, the thickness of the insulation layer can be more than 40 mm. When the multiple exterior walls need to be renovated, the north wall should be renovated first. The renovation scheme can provide a reference for the energy saving renovation of existing rural buildings to achieve the purpose of energy saving.
